Kiel Marine Science


KMS Network

Kiel Marine Science (KMS) is a member of the German Marine Research Consortium KDM. In KDM, member institutes pool their marine science expertise in order to jointly present this expertise to decision makers and funding bodies and to disseminate it to the general public. With its research, its contributions to academic education, to knowledge transfer and technology development, to marine research and, as an initiator, KMD contributes significantly to the importance of the maritime sector of coastal states in northern Germany. Under the umbrella of KDM, the strategic groups Biodiversity, Coastal Research, Mineral Resources, Observatories and Ocean in the climate system and the working group Social Sciences have developed.

KDM is a member of the European Marine Board (EMB), which is the leading European think tank in marine science policy. It provides a platform to advance marine research and to bridge the gap between science and policy. The next EMB meeting, the 6th EMB-Forum 2017, will take place on Thursday 6 December 2017 in Brussels, Belgium, and will cover the topic of International Ocean Governance.

The Coastal Research Network Schleswig-Holstein  is based on a cooperation contract between Kiel Marine Science (KMS), the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Centre for Materials and Coastal Research (HZG) and GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. These four important actors in the German federal state Schleswig-Holstein joined together moderated by the state government to coordinate theirfrastructures and research agenda.
