Bacterial Multicellularity in Biofilms
On most moist surfaces, bacteria grow into communities termed biofilms. Such biofilms display strongly increased tolerance to antibiotics, and constitute the most abundant form of biomass on Earth.

Prof. Dr. Knut Drescher from the MPI in Marburg will present a new microscopy and imaging technique to monitor dynamic processes of biofilms on the single cell level. Using this new method he will demonstrate biofilm responses to antibiotic stress and bacterial collective behaviors in relation to physical stress and chemical signaling.

Knut Drescher recently received the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Price (DFG) and the science prize of the VAAM for his work.
