Kiel Marine Science

International Master’s Degree Programmes

In Kiel, there are three international master’s degree programs conducted in English:

These degree programs provide sound scientific expertise in geology, biology, chemistry, physics, and meteorology. Our goal is to give highly motivated students with a keen interest in the natural sciences a state-of-the-art education. Lecturers are internationally renowned scientists from diverse fields dedicated to both science and teaching. Master’s students acquire fundamental knowledge about ocean systems and processes in lectures and seminars, and do hands-on experimental work in practical laboratory courses and on sea-going and land-based research expeditions. They learn the essential steps of scientific work by collecting, analyzing, interpreting and presenting research data on their own. Students who are interested in other marine disciplines can attend courses in other international M.Sc. programs in Kiel, for example courses in coastal sustainability and management, environmental and resource economics and law of the sea. This research-based disciplinary education with the opportunity for cross-disciplinary exchange enables students to become well-rounded experts in the marine sciences.

There are many good reasons to study in Kiel:

  • top-level education in the marine sciences

  • exposure to a world-class research environment with scientists from a diverse array of disciplines

  • a good mix of theoretical and practical courses

  • elective courses in other disciplines for individual interests

  • hands-on experience on research cruises and land-based expeditions

  • high quality of living at the Baltic Sea Coast with many opportunities for maritime pastimes

Who are our prospective students?
We welcome applicants with basic knowledge in the natural sciences and with a keen interest in basic research. We strongly encourage applicants from abroad. Prospective students must be proficient in English and motivated to work independently on smaller scientific projects.
