The impact of climate change, the secrets of the deep sea, the industrialization of the oceans: The Ocean and its coasts pose great challenges to humans.
The Colloquium Fundamentale of the ZAK | Centre for Cultural and General Studies at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) dealt with current marine research under the title “Humans and the ocean: Hopes and challenges” in the summer semester 2017.

The lecture of Professor Dr. Silja Klepp juxtaposes her two research fields and studies the narratives and logics of action which are connected to the migration in the Mediterranean Sea between Libya and Italy as well as with the topic climate migration. ‘Ethnographic vignettes’ from the border region on the sea in the Mediterranean Sea and from Kiribati, located in the central Pacific, were presented. Both topics which are medially charged and politicized obtain new dimensions in ethnographic research. These are central to the issues of the 21st century such as North-South debates and climate change.
