Delegation of the Kiel University visits China

To celebrate the 30-year anniversary of the partnership between the University of Kiel and the Zhejiang University, a scientific delegation of nine traveled to China from 08-12 May 2016 together with Prof Lutz Kipp, Kiel University President. At the same time, the government of Schleswig-Holstein and the government of Zhejiang Province celebrated 30 years of successful partnerships.

The delegation included researchers in sinology, medicine, materials science, economics, and the marine sciences, represented by Prof Ralph Schneider (fourth from left), director of KMS. In addition to the official celebration ceremonies, there was plenty of time to meet with Chinese marine scientists and discuss plans for future cooperation in research and in the exchange of students and doctoral candidates. Prof. CHEN Ying (fifth from left), Dean of the Ocean College, Zhejiang University, invited Prof Schneider to visit the recently completed campus. The Ocean College Campus is located on the island of Zhoushan about 200 km from the province capital Hanghzou and can accommodate 4000 students. Currently, about 250 employees in various fields of marine science and technology are present at the Campus.

Prof Ralph Schneider, who had visited the construction site in 2012, was very impressed by the size of the new campus: "It is remarkable how the technology-based marine sciences in China are developing. The campus facilities, the diverse fields of marine science represented here, and the interest of the Chinese partners in Kiel Marine Sciences offer interesting possibilities for future cooperation".
