Kiel Marine Science

Cluster of Excellence, 'The Future Ocean'
KMS has been involved in the Cluster of Excellence "The Future Ocean" for almost 10 years now. A third phase is currently being applied for together with the IPN Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education, GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW).

Mission: The ocean. It covers more than two thirds of our planet and therefore plays a pivotal role in achieving the sustainable future of humanity. How does the ocean control climate and environment at transitions of warming? How can living and non-living ocean resources be exploited in a sustainable or low impact manner by striking an appropriate balance between ocean use and ocean protection?

KMS members participate in two Collaborative Research Centers (CRSs):

Collaborative Research Center 1182 "Origin and Function of Metaorganisms"
CRC 1182 has the following mission: From protists to humans, all animals and plants are inhabited by microbial organisms. There is an increasing appreciation that these resident microbes influence fitness of their plant and animal hosts, ultimately forming a metaorganism consisting of a uni- or multicellular host and a community of associated microorganisms.

Collaborative Research Center 754 "Climate-Biogeochemistry Interactions in the Tropical Ocean"
The CRC 754 addresses the relatively newly recognized threat of ocean deoxygenation, its possible impact on tropical oxygen minimum zones and implications for the global climate-biogeochemistry system. The overall goal of the CRC 754 is to improve understanding of the coupling of tropical climate variability and circulation with the ocean's oxygen and nutrient balance, to quantitatively evaluate the nature of oxygen-sensitive tipping points, as well as to assess the consequences for the Ocean's future.

Sino-German Cooperation
The Marine and Earth Sciences in Kiel have established strong relationships with universities and non-university research institutes in China, in particular, with the Ocean University of China (OUC) in Qingdao and the Ocean College of Zhejiang University in Hangzhou.
