Application for Membership in KMS

The KMS provides for three memberships for researchers in the marine and geosciences:
Full Membership, Associate Membership and Partner Membership.

Full Membership
Full members are characterized by particularly intensive and international research activities in their main field and have proven their expertise in a relevant doctorate, in publications and in successful third-party funding. They have full speaking and voting rights at the general assembly and can be elected to the KMS steering committee as representatives of the faculties. Full membership in KMS requires employment at the University of Kiel and is limited to 5 years. A full membership can be extended upon application and is valid for another 5 years or until leaving Kiel University. The steering committee decides on admission and can recommend an associate membership instead of a full membership.

A letter of motivation, in which the research activity and the interest in cooperation in the marine sciences are documented, is required. An academic curriculum vitae with proof of publication activity and third-party funding must be enclosed.
The electronic documents should include

  • a meaningful letter of motivation from the applicant,
  • max. 5 pages CV with publication activity and acquisition of third-party funds

Associate Membership
Associate members are characterized by research activities in their field of specialization, have proven their expertise in a relevant doctorate and are usually in a further qualification phase (post-doc) at the Kiel University. They can participate in KMS working groups and have full speaking rights at the general assembly but are not entitled to vote. Associate membership requires employment at Kiel University. Membership is limited to 3 years. Associate membership can be extended upon application and is valid for a further 3 years or until leaving Kiel University.
An application for associate membership must be made through a full member. The application must be accompanied by a letter of motivation clearly stating the candidate's interest in marine science research and an academic curriculum vitae.

The electronic documents shall include

  • a letter of application and support from a full member,
  • a letter of motivation from the candidate clearly indicating the candidate's interest in marine science research,
  • max. 5 pages CV

Partner Membership
Partner members work in an external research institution and are demonstrably linked to KMS through scientific cooperation. They are characterized by particularly intensive and international research activities in their main field and have proven their expertise in a relevant doctorate, in publications and in successful third-party fundraising. They can participate in working groups of the KMS and have full speaking rights at the general assembly but are not entitled to vote.
Membership requires employment at a partner institution of the KMS. The membership is limited to 5 years. A partner membership extended on application is valid for a further 5 years or withdrawal from the partner institution.

The electronic documents should include

  • a letter of application and support from a KMS full member,
  • a letter of motivation from the candidate clearly stating his/her interest in marine science research and cooperation,
  • max. 5 pages CV with publication activity and acquisition of third-party funds

Membership can only be granted upon written application. It must be sent in electronic, written form to the Director of KMS (Prof. Dr. Ralph Schneider, Institute of Geosciences) and is accepted at the KMS Office (Wiebke Martens, wmartens@uv.uni-kiel.de).

The steering group decides on the membership applications and the day of the resolution is considered the entry date. Membership in KMS is limited. Membership can be extended informally upon application. The KMS Office organizes the process. A resignation can be declared by the member to the steering group at any time. An expulsion for important reasons can be made by a two-thirds majority of the members of the steering group.
