Information about Prof. Dr. Kerstin von der Decken


Kerstin Odendahl studied law and political sciences in Bonn, Aix-en-Provence and Trier. She earned her doctorate in Trier in 1997 before absolving her Legal Preparatory Service in Cottbus, Bonn and London. After working for some years in Berlin she completed her habilitation in 2004 in Trier and was named Professor of Public International Law and European Union Law in St. Gallen, Switzerland. 2011 she became Professor of Public International Law and European Union Law in Kiel as well as Managing Director of the Walther Schücking Institute for International Law at Kiel University.


The research of Kerstin Odendahl covers a wide range of topics of public international law. Central research questions include:

  • Which rules apply to the protection of the environment, including the marine environment?
  • Which methods of peaceful dispute settlement are the best to be applied for solving the various international conflicts including conflicts on the law of the sea?
  • Which is the best way to cope with security problems, including piracy, organized crime at sea etc.?
  • How is the underwater cultural heritage protected?
