Professor Dr. Frank Kempken was born in the city of Moers (Germany) in 1960. Between 1980 and 1985 he studied Biology at the Ruhr University Bochum, where he then earned his doctorate and worked as a scientific employee. After a stay abroad at the University of Florida between 1989 and 1990, he habilitated in 1996 at the Department of General and Molecular Botany in Bochum and worked as lecturer there.

In 2001 Frank Kempken became university professor for Botany with the emphasis on Genetics and Molecular Biology in Kiel. From 2004 to 2008, Kempken was Vice Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. From 2008 to 2014 he was Vice President of the university. In January 2014 he was elected to become president of the German Society for Genetics.
