Information about Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Gernot Friedrichs

Gernot Friedrichs studied Chemistry at the University of Göttingen. In 1999 he completed his doctorate there at the Institute of Physical Chemistry. After a postdoc fellowship at the Mechanical Engineering Department at Stanford University (USA) he continued his work as a research assistant at the Institute of Physical Chemistry in Kiel. He had short stays as a guest researcher at Tokyo University (Japan) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

In 2007 Gernot Friedrichs was offered a newly created Junior Professorship for Chemistry of the Ocean Surface in the Cluster of Excellence ‘Future Ocean’. At the end of 2011 he received tenure at the Institute of Physical Chemistry in Kiel with a focus on ‘Ocean Surface Chemistry and Reaction Kinetics’.

Research questions

  • How can modern laser spectroscopic methods be used to advance our molecular level understanding of marine processes?
  • What determines the composition, structure and reactivity of the marine organic nanolayer?
  • How can trace gases and their isotopologues be selectively and sensitively detected?
  • To what extent do oxidation processes alter the organic coating of atmospheric particles?
  • Can optical sensors be applied in field settings?
  • How does high temperature gas phase kinetics influence the formation of pollutants in combustion processes?
  • How to design functionalized surfaces that can be optically switched?
