Ruth Schmitz-Streit studied Biology at Philipps University in Marburg. In 1992 she earned her doctorate in Microbiology. After a research stay in Berkeley, USA, she worked at Georg August University in Göttingen, where she completed her habilitation in 2001. In 2004 Ruth Schmitz- Streit was named Professor of Microbiology in Kiel.
